Meat Purveyors: The Last Radio Gig
A service of The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page
When the Dixie Chicks traded lead singer and co-founder Laura Lynch
for unknown firebrand Natalie Maines, local critics predicted the end of the group. That
was a reasonable conclusion, based on the history of other indie groups. Of course, with the Chicks, the
critics were wrong more than 10 million times over! But the facts of life on the road
are not always so rosy.
Austin's
Meat Purveyors
could have been the next Dixie Chicks... or not. We'll never know because they broke up on December 31, 1999,
in a move announced months ahead of time. But they left a legacy of unique Texas music, and the members
(particularly vocalist Jo Walston and songwriter/guitarist Bill Anderson)
are sure to turn up somewhere in the booming alt.country scene.
Luckily for us, the Meat Purveyors did us one last favor. They appeared on the Univerity of Texas college radio station
KUT FM 90.5 in Austin, late in 1999. Through unknown channels,
Texas Music lover "Brandon R" (brandonr@ddms.com) managed to snag a RealAudio copy of the interview
and performance. I can make no guarantees as to the quality of this file -- for all I know, it was recorded on an 8-track tape
in a Longhorn fan's pickup truck during a tailgate party.
In any case, The All-Inclusive Dixie Chicks Page is happy to post it here as a service to fans of
the Texas music scene.
